Calcium is a mineral that is an
essential part of bones and teeth. It is the most abundant mineral in the human
body, making up about 2% of the total body weight. The bones and teeth contain over 99% of the calcium in
the human body. It can also be found in the blood, muscles, and other tissue. The main
role of calcium in the body is to provide structure and strength to the skeleton. It significant cannot
be over emphasis.
Calcium in the bones can be used
as a reserve that can be released into the body as needed. Calcium can help to control osteoporosis - bone pains, weak bones due to low bone density and this
disease is common among women (as women age, absorption of calcium tends to
decline due to reduced estrogen levels) especially women above of age of 29 as
a result of their monthly menstrual period. When you have knees or shoulder
pain, it may be traced to low calcium trace in your body.
Calcium can be sourced from milk, Cheese, yogurt, soy beverages,
orange juice, and rice beverages, but not limited to these. The level of calcium intake of individual depends on age, 1,000 and 1,300 mg per
day for adults.
There are other diseases that can be traced to deficiency of calcium:
ü muscle cramps(muscles ache, especially those of the
thighs, arms, and underarms while moving and walking around)
ü insomnia(loss of sleep)
ü tooth decay
ü delay in puberty (especially girls)
ü low/ poor bone density
ü weak and brittle
